MEADOWLANDS ANNOUNCES TURF RACE FOR PACERS

MANALAPAN, NJ – June 5, 2009 – Harness racing returns to the turf course at the Meadowlands for the first time in more than 30 years.

The turf event will take place on Friday, June 19, 2009. Post positions will be drawn on Tuesday, June 16 and the race will be on the betting program.

The conditions of the race call for eight $15,000 claiming pacers who will line up behind the mobile starting gate for a one-mile race on the turf.

The last time the Meadowlands held a turf race for standardbreds was June 21, 1978, the Coliseum Cup, which featured only drivers named Manzi.

The participants in the Manzi Family Pace were patriarchs John Sr., Al and Richard, as well as the cousins, Steve, Richard Jr., Gary, John and Cat.

“Richard Manzi Jr. won the race with a pacer named El Nob in a time of 2:09.3 over the turf course,” recalled one of the participants, John Manzi, who is now the public relations director for Monticello Raceway. “I finished second with Keystone Holiday, and I think my brother Gary Manzi was third.”
